George S. Webb is a retired Army colonel who served for 31 years on active duty. He was born in Tokyo when his father was stationed overseas, and he was raised as an Army brat in Japan, in Germany, and throughout the United States.
He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1972 and began his own career in the Army. Initially commissioned as an armor officer, he also trained as an Army aviator. Ultimately he retained ratings in armor, aviation, and cavalry. In addition to duty assignments in the US, he has served in Germany, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq (Operation Desert Storm). He has commanded a tank company (Germany), an attack helicopter company (Fort Carson, CO), a general support aviation battalion (Germany), a regimental air cavalry squadron (Fort Bliss, TX and Desert Storm), and a training support brigade (Fort Riley). He also has held a variety of staff assignments, including aviation officer and chief of deep operations on the combined, joint, and Army staffs in Korea; seminar leader and committee chief in the School of Advanced Military Studies and the Combined Armed and Services Staff School at Fort Leavenworth; and logistical plans officer for the 1st Armored Division. He served in Topeka, KS for three years until his retirement as the senior army advisor to the Adjutant General of Kansas. In January, 2004 he was appointed as the executive director of the Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs.
In addition to holding a bachelor of science degree in engineering from the USMA, he has earned a Master of Military Arts and Science Degree from the Army's Command and General Staff College. He also earned a Masters in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. His military awards include the Joint Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit Medals, the Bronze Star Medal, the Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medals, and the Army Commendation Medal. He is an Army aviator, a ranger, and a parachutist. He is the past president of the Topeka chapter of the Association of the United States Army and the Fort Riley chapter of the Army Aviation Association of America.
Colonel Webb is married to the former Rita McCrary of Russell, Kansas.
