Fort Riley Cemetery Update
On November 11, 2007-Veteran’s Day- the new Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley groundbreaking took place. Over 300 people attended this special event. Guest speakers were: Major General Robert Durbin, Commanding General, First Infantry Division Fort Riley, Richard Jepsen, Col (AUS Ret), Honorable Lana Oleen, Former Kansas Senator, Honorable Nancy Boyda, U.S. Congresswoman, Honorable Jerry Moran, U.S. Congressman, Honorable Sam Brownback, U.S. Senator, Honorable Pat Roberts, U.S. Senator, Frank Salvas, Director State Cemetery Grants Service, NCA and Jack Fowler, Chairman, KCVA representing the Governor’s office.
Where are we now?
- Construction documents approved by Department of Veterans Affairs, State Cemetery Grants Programs (September)
- Project went out to bid ( September)
- McPherson Contractor, Inc were selected to construct the new Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley ( November)
- Department of Veterans Affairs awarded grant to the State of Kansas (November)
- “Notice to Proceed” authorizing McPherson contractors, Inc to start construction (December)
Timelines
Approximate completion of the project is expected in late calendar year 2008. Construction normally takes 9 to 12 months depending on weather.
