Cemetery Job Openings
The KCVA is hiring one maintenance position at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at WaKeeney. If you are interested in applying for this position, please read the information below carefully.

General Maintenance and Repair Technician (Grade 15 – Step 4 = $11.21 hourly).
Special Note: This position additionally is paid a 30 cent hourly retention differential.
Work Schedule
- (typically) M-F / 8-5; may vary for purposes of training, a funeral or other reasons determined essential by the manager.
Physical Demands
- Considerable physical exertion is frequently required involving lifting and moving objects weighing over 50 pounds,
- Requires moderately heavy efforts in reaching, bending in the use of equipment and vehicles,
- Subject to strains from vibration and jolting from equipment,
- May require long periods of physical labor such as digging graves by hand or leveling graves,
- Requires lifting, bending, twisting and stooping on a repetitive basis, and
- Work is performed outside, subject to extreme heat and inclement weather conditions and requires long hours on mowers and tractors in a variety of weather conditions.
As the General Maintenance and Repair Technician you will:
- have the opportunity to be a team member within the veterans' cemetery program in Kansas,
- be responsible for the daily maintenance, grounds work and upkeep of the cemetery,
- assist with the preparation for funeral and memorial services,
- may be required to assist at another state veteran's cemetery location for special services.
G.M.R.T. Minimum Requirements:
- Six months of experience in a building trades or mechanical building trade. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.,
- Must have valid driver's license at the time of appointment. Must retain an appropriate vehicle operator’s license,
- Knowledge and abilities listed under Key Requirements Section.
G.M.R.T. Key Requirements:
You must have knowledge of:
- the basic function of two or more of the trades required for the construction, maintenance, and repair of facilities and equipment,
- operation, care and maintenance of tools, vehicles, and other construction or maintenance equipment, including basic farm machinery,
- basic methods of grounds maintenance of farming.
You must have the ability to:
- understand and carry out specific oral and written instruction, to perform basic arithmetic, and to read and understand basic diagrams and schematics,
- understand basic but varied mechanical systems such as plumbing, locksmith, wiring, motors, mechanical equipment; to defective operation and make mechanical repairs,
- learn skilled use of tools, materials, and methods used in the varying crafts associated with facilities maintenance,
- ability to meet the public effectively, and
- submit your completed application by the closing date of the announcement (See "How to Apply" Section).
G.M.R.T. Preferred Requirements:
Knowledge of:
- agri-chemical usage and application,
- plant species, size and shape, and
- cemetery rules and regulations, policies and procedures,
Ability to:
- read, interpret and work from sketches, blueprints and specifications,
- communicate effectively, both orally and in writing,
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
Prefer one year of experience in ground maintenance of a cemetery.

- To be successful, the candidate will:
Be expected to routinely perform the position tasks with limited supervision by the end of the probationary period.
