The History

The State’s second Home for Veterans was signed into law as House Bill No. 2497, by Governor Bill Graves on April 10, 1997, at Memorial Park in Winfield, Kansas. The bill authorized the Kansas Commission on Veterans’ Affairs to operate the Kansas Veterans’ Home on the grounds of the former Winfield State Hospital and Training Center on and after January 1998.

As the renovation was completed, the Home opened for residency. Donlon Hall’s first domiciliary residents were admitted May 1, 2000. Bleckley Hall’s first long-term care residents arrived June 12, 2000.

In its first ten years of operation, KVH has been home to 600 veterans and eligible dependents.
